Circa Waves Unveil New Single ‘Like You Did Before’ Ahead of Cathartic Album Death & Love Pt.1

Liverpool’s indie favourites Circa Waves are back, and they’ve come bearing gifts for their loyal fanbase. The band has dropped the electrifying new single ‘Like You Did Before’, the latest taste of their highly anticipated album Death & Love Pt.1, set to release on 31st January 2025 via Lower Third/[PIAS].

This track follows the album’s earlier offerings, including the anthemic ‘We Made It’ and the introspective ‘American Dream’, delivering a sound that channels the swagger and grit of the 2000s New York indie scene. With undeniable Strokes-esque energy and a driving dancefloor rhythm, ‘Like You Did Before’ is a slice of nostalgic indie rock at its finest.

A Song Born of Fragility and Escape

Frontman Kieran Shudall opens up about the deeply personal inspiration behind the song, recalling a pivotal moment in his life. “This song is a reminder of a moment in my life that many people don’t know about,” he says. “Just before my heart operation, lying in hospital when life felt uncertain and fragile, I would imagine myself in a packed sweaty indie club, dancing like my life depended on it. It was a daydream, a form of escape, and this song fits perfectly into that vision.”

This raw vulnerability fuels Death & Love Pt.1, an album described as an urgent, cathartic hit of guitar-pop that channels the fear and triumph of Shudall’s near-death experience. The album’s nine tracks were self-produced by Kieran and engineered by Matt Wiggins (Adele, Lana Del Rey, Glass Animals), giving it a nostalgic yet fresh soundscape that reflects the band’s evolution.

From Heart Surgery to Indie Glory

Shudall’s journey to the album was anything but ordinary. In early 2023, he received a life-changing call from doctors about a severely blocked artery. Days later, he underwent emergency heart surgery, a moment that forced the cancellation of shows and a total reassessment of life. The result? A bold new chapter for Circa Waves, with Death & Love Pt.1 serving as a powerful snapshot of survival, creativity, and joy.
