The Timeless Power of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Greta Van Fleet and the New Era

In the 60s and 70s, rock music dominated the airwaves and defined a generation. Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Joy Division weren’t just making music; they were rewriting history. Rock ‘n’ roll became the voice of rebels, misfits, and underdogs who suddenly felt heard and validated. However, this cultural shift didn’t come without backlash. Critics and the general public labeled the movement as ‘vulgar,’ ‘depraved,’ and ‘chaotic,’ scandalised by the rebellious spirit that rock music represented.

Yet, despite the criticism, rock music not only survived—it flourished. It broke records, smashed barriers, and solidified itself as an eternal part of music history. Now, nearly seven decades later, the hunger for this genre persists. While not as mainstream as it once was, rock’s essence remains alive, and bands like Greta Van Fleet are ushering in a new era. As the band’s guitarist Jake Kiszka put it in a recent GQ Magazine interview, “It’s not a resurgence of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s more like a renaissance.” And so far, they’re delivering on that promise. Their debut album, “Anthem of the Peaceful Army,” released on October 19th, topped the Billboard Rock Album charts and clinched the number one spot on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart in its first week.

But it’s not just the impressive sales or chart positions that make Greta Van Fleet special. What sets them apart is their genuine passion for music, their vintage style, and undeniable talent. At their sold-out show at Manchester Academy, the band delivered an unforgettable performance. Josh Kiszka’s wailing vocals echoed effortlessly, often drawing comparisons to the legendary Robert Plant. His brother, Jake, was equally impressive, showcasing a mastery of his guitar that left the audience in awe. The chemistry between all four members created a powerful energy that electrified the entire venue.

Though their sound is rooted in gritty, hard rock, there’s an unexpected sense of safety and warmth that their music brings to their audience. With a band motto of “Peace, love, and unity,” their lyrics foster a deep connection between them and their fans, offering comfort during dark times. Lines like “Where is the music?/ A tune to free the soul/ A simple lyric, to unite us all” resonate with listeners, reminding them that even in chaos, there’s unity.

While some may still dismiss rock music as ‘chaos and noise,’ I see it differently. To me, rock music represents freedom—a refuge and a safe space for those who need it. And thanks to bands like Greta Van Fleet, rock ‘n’ roll will continue to thrive, ensuring that its legacy is never forgotten.
