Jelly Roll Brings Local Inmates on Stage in Charlottesville

Jelly Roll’s Beautifully Broken Tour has been full of surprises, but his show at Charlottesville’s John Paul Jones Arena on October 30 reached new emotional depths. In a heartfelt move, Jelly Roll invited four local inmates to join him on stage, creating a night of raw emotion and connection.

Earlier that day, Jelly Roll, known for his candid songs about struggle and redemption, had visited a nearby county jail as part of his ongoing tour mission to connect with those in tough situations. “I try to make it a point in every city we play to visit a rehab, a jail, or a homeless shelter,” he told the crowd. But this particular visit hit differently.

“There’s a local jail about an hour from here with a program that’s teaching people how to recover the right way, through therapy and music,” he said. “Getting a real second chance. It’s a really forward-thinking place.” During the visit, Jelly Roll met a group of inmates who recognised him instantly and even started singing some of his songs right there in the cell. Moved by their voices and the passion in their eyes, he couldn’t shake the encounter, and a wild idea began to take shape.

In a bold move, he called the local sheriff, explaining his plan: “Would you bring those inmates to the show tonight so they can see the dream? It won’t cost a tax dollar, I’ll pay for everything. I just want them to see that it can happen, ‘cause it happened for me.” Against all odds, the sheriff agreed, and that night, the four men took the stage alongside Jelly Roll, unrestrained and wearing plain clothes, sharing a moment of freedom and purpose under the stage lights.

“If anybody believes in second chances, it’s a Jelly Roll show!” he told the crowd, who erupted in applause. Then, they launched into his recent hit Unpretty, singing, “I hate the man I used to be / But he’ll always be a part of me.” For Jelly Roll, the lyrics captured everything he wanted to say about his own journey — that the scars and mistakes of the past don’t define the future.

This gesture wasn’t just a one-off. Jelly Roll knows firsthand what it means to be given a second chance. He’s been open about his own history of addiction and run-ins with the law, and his transformation from those days to where he is now has become a core part of his music and message. By bringing these men on stage, he was showing them, and everyone watching, that change is possible.

The crowd was filled with pure emotion as they left the stage, knowing they’d witnessed something rare: an artist not only using his music to share his story but using his platform to lift others up. Jelly Roll’s fans know that his concerts are more than just a show—they’re a reminder of the power of redemption and the beauty of second chances.
