The Guest List Return With ‘Something Real’ — A Defiant New Single Taking Aim at Post-Truth Culture

If 2026 already feels loud, chaotic and slightly unhinged, The Guest List have arrived with a soundtrack for it.

The Manchester five-piece kick off the year with ‘Something Real’, a punchy, razor-edged new single that pairs driving guitars with a direct critique of a world fuelled by outrage cycles and algorithm-fed division. It follows a breakout 2025 that saw the band sell out a 14-date UK headline tour and release their debut EP When The Lights Are Out, and this latest release makes it clear they’re not easing up.

Frontman Cai Alty cuts straight through the noise with the now-defining lines: “Hate is on trend / War is on trend,” before landing on the track’s central hook, “And I know that it blows your mind just to hear me saying something real.” It’s sharp, it’s confrontational, and it’s delivered over a backdrop that feels deceptively buoyant. The tension works.

Sonically, the band continue to expand. Rolling Stone UK previously described them as “a thrillingly ambitious statement of intent,” drawing parallels with Humbug-era Arctic Monkeys. That ambition is still present here, but there’s also a growing clarity in both message and execution. The guitars feel tighter, the choruses bigger, and the intent unmistakable.

Alty has described ‘Something Real’ as the song that best represents what the band want to stand for, an attempt to hold onto meaning in a climate shaped by bots, culture wars and monetised outrage. It’s less preachy manifesto, more frustrated observation. And that balance is what makes it land.

Formed in 2021 as school friends and music students, the band first built an online following posting covers, quickly surpassing 400,000 followers and clocking up nearly eight million likes before pivoting into original material. Since then, they’ve racked up over five million Spotify streams and earned praise from The Independent, Dork and Music Week, while drawing early support from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins. They’ve also played Glastonbury, The Great Escape and TRNSMT, with Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale reportedly catching their Glastonbury set.

Live momentum continues this April with a 14-date UK headline tour, including stops in Dublin, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and Brighton. After selling 6,000 tickets on their last run, including three nights at London’s Camden Assembly and a 1,300-capacity hometown show at Manchester’s New Century Hall, expectations are only climbing.

The Guest List have been vocal about not wanting to be boxed in by Manchester’s musical legacy, despite their roots. They’re aiming to be recognised for what they are now, not just where they’re from.

‘Something Real’ feels like a line drawn in the sand. Not a grand speech. Not a slogan. Just a reminder that clarity still cuts through, especially when it’s loud.
