With I Am, Walker dives deep into his personal journey, exploring themes of self-discovery and reflection. As the artist himself puts it, “I’ve called it ‘I Am’ because it’s the culmination of me trying to figure out who I am for the last four years. This record is a snapshot of what’s been going on in my life, and what’s been happening around me – what’s made me happy or sad, ecstatic or miserable.”
The album features standout tracks like ‘Burn’, ‘Freaking Out’, ‘Head Underwater’, and ‘Holy Ghost’. Fans were recently treated to memorable performances of ‘Burn’ and ‘Freaking Out’ on Later… With Jools Holland, further fueling excitement for the upcoming release.
A Raw, Honest Sound
Known for his heartfelt storytelling, Walker’s previous work often highlighted the experiences of others, including his breakout hit ‘Leave A Light On’, which told the story of a friend’s battle with addiction. With I Am, the focus shifts to Walker’s personal struggles. The album chronicles his own battles with anxiety, creative challenges, and moments of despair.
Walker reflects, “It’s the first time in a long time I’ve felt like I would die for these songs. You’ve got to ignore what everyone else wants from you, and back yourself.”
A Creative Rebirth
After struggling to find inspiration, Walker traveled to Los Angeles, where he collaborated with renowned producers, including the McDonough brothers and Ryan Daly, whose credits include work with Beyoncé, Khalid, and John Legend. This creative reinvigoration is evident in tracks like ‘Lifeline’, ‘Burn’, and ‘Holy Ghost’.
