Essex indie-rock risers Black Lounge have shared their statement-of-intent follow-up single, ‘Roommate’, marking another massive step forward for the band. Both the new track and their recent release, ‘Welcome Home’, are set to feature on the group’s highly anticipated upcoming debut EP, which will be released via Right Track Recordings—the brand-new record label launched by legendary Chrysalis founder Chris Wright.
Powered by an instant hook, fuzzy guitar melodies, and a punchy punk exuberance, ‘Roommate’ beautifully captures the spirit of a lost cult classic from the vibrant 2000s indie scene. To capture this raw energy, Black Lounge headed into London’s historic RAK Studios alongside producer Danton Supple, who is renowned for his seminal work with alternative titans like Coldplay and Suede.
Lyrically, the single takes a tongue-in-cheek look at a situation countless young adults find themselves in today. With skyrocketing rents making living alone increasingly difficult, ‘Roommate’ tackles the chaotic reality of shared housing, focusing on the passive-aggressive battles that can turn a communal living room into a toxic environment. Frontman George Grant explains that the track is rooted in these very real, messy experiences of shared accommodation, noting that the song is about living with someone you simply can’t stand, where neither side is a saint and both are as bad as each other. He adds that the comedic lyrics tell the story of a messy, hard-partying environment, capturing that feeling of being completely fed up with someone’s ways when you just want to go home.
This honest songwriting has helped Black Lounge build formidable momentum since George Grant formed the project in 2024. The group has already secured repeated airplay from BBC Introducing and sold out headline slots across London and Essex, including a triumphant recent show at London’s The Victoria. Now armed with a leveled-up new line-up featuring Ben Gulik on guitar, James Ladds on bass, and Jack Cassidy on drums, the band are primed for a massive year ahead on the live circuit alongside contemporaries like The Molotovs and The Clause.
The new single ‘Roommate’ is available to stream now on all major platforms, and the official music video is available to watch online ahead of their upcoming debut EP release.
