There’s something quite brave about a song that refuses to wallow. “White Flag,” the new single from Darren Kiely out today on Free Flight Records, isn’t about giving up β it’s about the decision to put old bitterness down and actually let something new in. It’s a small but meaningful distinction, and the song earns it.
Kiely co-wrote the track with Henry Agincourt Allen, and for the first time took on production duties himself β a move he credits to the perspective built up from years of playing his music live. That experience shows in the result. The production is uncluttered: upbeat guitar strumming carries the momentum, leaving room for his vocals to do the heavier emotional work. The overall feel is warm and optimistic without tipping into saccharine.
“‘White Flag’ is about surrendering past hurt, bitterness, and blame so that love can have another chance,” Kiely said. “It’s a song that describes the alternative to harboring resentment and recognises the vulnerability to get to the place of reconciliation.”
It’s a natural follow-up to “Hidden Away,” which drew a strong notice from Rotate Magazine β they noted that Kiely was continuing to sharpen his voice as a storyteller, offering music that feels personal and universally relatable in equal measure. “White Flag” feels like another step in that direction, a little more assured, a little more settled in what it wants to say.
The Co. Cork native has been on a steady upward path since relocating to New York in 2022 and then Nashville, where he signed to Free Flight Records. His influences β The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Noah Kahan β are audible in his sound, which threads traditional Irish folk roots through a modern, transatlantic sensibility. His debut EP Lost charted in Ireland, and last year’s world tour took him across multiple continents. The momentum is real.
He’s also set to open for The Lumineers on select June dates of their Automatic World Tour β details and tickets in our tour piece.
