Olivia Rodrigo’s new era is officially underway. ‘drop dead’ — the lead single from her forthcoming third album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, out June 12 via Geffen Records — is out now, and the music video that comes with it was filmed at the Palace of Versailles and directed by Petra Collins. As opening statements go, that’s a pretty confident one.
The song was written with Rodrigo’s longtime collaborator and producer Dan Nigro — who produced both SOUR and GUTS — alongside Amy Allen, whose credits include Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ and Tate McRae’s ‘greedy’. Rodrigo has described the album as a “creative challenge”, having written it while in a relationship with British actor Louis Partridge. “I realised all my favourite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” she said — and ‘drop dead’ fits that description perfectly.
The campaign leading up to today’s release was characteristically clever — pink padlocks placed in cities including London, Los Angeles, Paris and New York that together spelled out “drop dead april 17th”, followed by a snippet posted to Instagram of Rodrigo sitting in a pub drinking Guinness with a fragment of the song playing in the background. The internet, predictably, lost its mind.
She’ll perform ‘drop dead’ as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live on May 2. You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is out June 12. Pre-orders are live now.
