New Zealand pop artist PRINS has returned with a new era in tow, releasing “The Sequel” as the opening statement of an upcoming EP titled Messy, Young & Able. The PRINS new single deals in the kind of tension that makes for compelling pop songwriting: wanting something badly while knowing full well it might come loaded with consequences.
Written in Los Angeles and produced by Adam Boukis, “The Sequel” leans into a dark-pop sound that suits its subject matter, with PRINS using the track to explore desire and anticipation without shying away from their messier undersides. It is a confident way to reopen a chapter, positioning the coming EP as a project less interested in easy resolutions than in sitting with ambition, self-discovery and the freedom that comes from accepting imperfection.
That EP, due for full release on 6 November, will be preceded by further singles across September and October, alongside an official announcement expected on 26 August. PRINS is clearly not treating this as a quiet rollout: a custom pop-up truck tour is planned across New Zealand in November, alongside international shows in Europe and the UK the previous month, before headline dates land in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland’s Powerstation to close out the year.
It is an ambitious run for a home-grown pop act, and one that suggests real confidence in the strength of the new material. Between the LA studio sessions, the producer pedigree and the scale of the touring plans attached to it, the PRINS new single reads less like a stopgap release and more like the opening move of a genuinely significant year for the artist.
Fans keen to catch the new material live will not have to wait especially long, with the New Zealand leg of the pop-up truck tour landing well before the year is out.
