Rachel Chinouriri has released ‘Make Believe’, the second single from her upcoming second album ‘I Think I Spoke Too Soon’, due out on 16 October via Parlophone.
Where lead single ‘One Song Away From Crying’ leaned into quiet self-reflection, ‘Make Believe’ turns towards obsession and the habit of letting your own boundaries slide. Chinouriri has described the song as being about “never holding my own boundaries and allowing someone who clearly hates me to have access to me at any moment”, a line that sums up the record’s more sensual, slightly unsettled register.
It is the sound of an artist stepping up a gear. Chinouriri’s 2024 debut earned her a Mercury Prize nomination and cemented her as one of the UK’s most closely watched new songwriters, and the rollout for album two suggests she is not slowing down to enjoy it: she is booked as a musical guest on SNL UK’s third episode on 26 September, and will join Gracie Abrams on US arena dates in December.
For a UK audience that has watched her build steadily rather than arrive fully formed, ‘Make Believe’ is a reminder of why the wait for album two has felt worth it. Two singles in, ‘I Think I Spoke Too Soon’ is shaping up to be a genuine step forward rather than a victory lap.
