The Downs Festival 2018: A Day of Eclectic Sounds and Legendary Performances

The Downs Festival 2018 offered one of the most diverse line-ups imaginable, catering to a wide variety of tastes and audiences. From rock legends like Noel Gallagher to electronic giants like Basement Jaxx, the day was filled with unforgettable performances and an eclectic atmosphere.

Dream Wife kicked off the main stage in the afternoon, bringing fierce feminist energy to a middle-aged crowd, setting a vibrant tone for the rest of the day.

At the Avon Stage, the younger audience soaked in the reggae-infused sounds of Bristol-based Laid Blak. With the unmistakable aroma of weed lingering in the air, the set featured reggae DJs and was later capped off by a thrilling DJ performance from Basement Jaxx. The duo mixed some of their iconic hits, including “Do Your Thing” and “Where’s Your Head At?”, energizing a truly mixed crowd—teenagers, 20-somethings, middle-agers, and families, all sharing in the festival vibes. This blend of people is what makes The Downs Festival so special.

As evening approached, the main stage became the prime spot. The Heavy livened up the festival-goers, waking them from their food comas with “How You Like Me Now,” a groove that set the stage for the night’s headliners: Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher.

As a 21-year-old millennial, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Paul Weller, but my mom was over the moon. Weller did not disappoint, blending hits from his solo career, The Style Council, and The Jam. While “A Town Called Malice” was notably absent, he still delivered a standout performance that resonated across generations.

When Noel Gallagher finally took the stage, it was a surreal moment. Growing up just minutes from the festival site, I never imagined seeing someone of Noel’s stature perform on The Downs. His signature wit was on full display—“So many bald people here, must be some Oasis fans”—as he launched into beloved Oasis classics like “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” and “Half the World Away.” The emotional energy was palpable, with one overly emotional fan tearing his shirt off and hugging strangers in a pure moment of musical euphoria.

The night ended with a surprise: Noel’s good friend Paul Weller returned to the stage for an epic rendition of “A Town Called Malice.” That performance alone might have turned me from a Liam fan to a Noel fan. By the end of the night, I was definitely Team Oasis—not Blur.
