Sesame Girl shine on heartfelt new indie anthem ‘Superstar’

The Canberra trio find their stride with a shimmering, guitar-drenched tribute to the friends who have your back.

There is a specific kind of magic in a song that feels like a warm hug from a best mate, and Sesame Girl have just bottled it. The Canberra-born trio have returned with ‘Superstar’, a track that swaps clinical polish for genuine heart and a shimmering, 90s-inspired wall of sound.

While their previous work hinted at this potential, ‘Superstar’ feels like the band finally stepping into their own light. It’s built on a foundation of sun-drenched acoustic guitars that eventually give way to a soaring, “gazey” chorus. Heather Duncan’s vocals are the anchor here—distinct, sincere, and entirely devoid of the over-processed gloss that plagues so much modern indie.

The track was born out of a collaboration with producer Simon Lam (whose credits include Charli XCX and The Temper Trap), and you can hear the elevation in their craft. It’s the second taste of a reinvented Sesame Girl, following on from the equally punchy ‘Back to Texas’. According to Duncan, the song is a “sincere ode to friendship,” a celebration of the people who stick around when the glitter fades. It’s refreshing to hear a track that prioritises platonic love with such unapologetic earnestness.

If you haven’t caught them live yet, you’ve likely missed them supporting the likes of Spacey Jane or Vacations across Australia. They’ve spent the last couple of years cutting their teeth on festival stages like Spilt Milk, and that road-tested energy is starting to bleed into their studio recordings.

You can watch the accompanying music video now, which captures the DIY, nostalgic aesthetic the band has mastered. It’s a bold step forward for a group that seems to have finally found the exact sound they’ve been chasing since their 2022 debut.
