Auckland electronic producer deepState, the recording name of Jessica Morgan, has released her new album Rain, a seven-track collection out now on Sunreturn.
The title single first appeared back in June, but it’s the album’s arrival that completes the picture: a record built, in Morgan’s words, around wanting “the song to have a floaty, airy quality, anchored by a heavy bass line and driven by a classic breakbeat.” That description doubles as a fair summary of deepState’s whole sound: warm, spacious electronic music that never loses its low end.
The rollout has been backed by NZ On Air, and the ‘Rain’ single arrived with an animated video from Wellington illustrator Nic Little, who works under the name Ew Splat. Little described the brief as building something that would “feel like a slow, drifting journey built around mood, space, and environment rather than a conventional narrative,” and the finished video leans fully into that idea: less a story than a mood board come to life.
Morgan is clearly happy with how it turned out.
“It’s always easy working with Nic because he has a great sense of creativity and can bring a loose concept to life visually,” she said, adding that the video’s “look, feel, and tone perfectly match the song.”
Rain is out now, and if the title single is any guide, it’s a solid excuse to put good headphones on and go for a long walk in the actual weather it’s named after.
