If you have ever completely lost your own self-respect trying to bend over backwards for someone else, Mae Stephens has written your new anthem. The former ASDA worker turned global pop sensation has officially entered her no-nonsense era with the release of ‘Earn It’. Fresh from its premier on BBC Radio 1 last night, the track sees the Northampton singer shedding her past as a self-confessed people pleaser and demanding that people finally start matching her energy.
Co-written with producer KiD RAiN, the single is a massive, unapologetic slice of modern pop. It pulls together the very best bits of the last few decades—think the groovy, bass-heavy funk of the 80s mixed with the pure, in-your-face charisma of early 2000s bubblegum pop. It is fierce, it is fun, and it proves exactly why heavyweights like BLACKPINK and P!nk have been singing her praises.
The best news is that you will not have to wait long to hear these new tracks live. Mae has just mapped out a proper grassroots UK headline tour for this November. She will be bringing her infectious energy to intimate independent hubs across the country, starting at Edinburgh’s legendary Sneaky Pete’s on 2nd November and winding down to a massive finale at London’s The Lower Third on 12th November.
Before the autumn tour kicks off, you can also catch her headlining The Black Prince in Northampton on 28th June. The hometown gig is part of the Music Venue Trust’s brilliant Everywhere At Once festival, a massive nationwide initiative keeping the live music scene alive during Glastonbury’s fallow year. Tickets for all dates are on sale now, and given she is already sitting on nearly 700 million streams, these tiny rooms are going to fill up incredibly fast.
