Sananda Maitreya Completes His Remastered Series

The artist formerly known as Terence Trent D'Arby rounds off his Columbia Years box set with the digital release of Vibrator.

Sananda Maitreya — known to many as Terence Trent D’Arby, the name under which he first burst onto the scene in the late 1980s — has completed his remastered album series with the digital release of his fourth album Vibrator. It’s also available as part of Juvenilia: The Columbia Years, a six-LP box set charting his early career in full.

If you need a reminder of why this matters, his debut Introducing The Hardline According To Sananda Maitreya was one of the most significant soul and R&B records of the 1980s — ‘Sign Your Name’ and ‘Wishing Well’ were genuinely era-defining — and what followed across Neither Fish Nor FleshSymphony Or Damn and Vibrator was the work of an artist who refused to repeat himself, pushing deeper into soul, funk, R&B and ambitious experimental territory with each release.

Vibrator, now remastered, finds him hitting a sweet spot between the songcraft of his debut and the deeper sonic explorations of those middle albums. It returned him to the UK Singles Chart Top 20 with ‘Holding On To You’, charted at number 11 for three weeks, and has since become a cult favourite. Songs like ‘Supermodel Sandwich’ and the title track remain live staples to this day.

The Juvenilia box set is a beautiful package — six LPs, restored artwork, archival visuals and new liner notes written by Sananda himself. For longtime fans it’s a definitive document. For anyone coming to his music fresh, it’s an extraordinary introduction to one of the most singular voices in British soul.

Alongside the reissue campaign comes SMNUK’25! (Shepherd’s Pie) — a live album and concert film recorded at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire during his 2025 UK tour with his band The Sugar Plum Pharaohs, mixing early material with highlights from his later work. He also featured on the cover of Classic Pop as part of the campaign.

Vibrator is available now digitally. Juvenilia: The Columbia Years box set available at sanandamaitreya.com.
