Whitney are back, and they’ve brought the perfect two-minute heart-squeeze to set the tone for what’s coming. “Darling” is out now — a dreamy, fleeting track that hits like a whispered goodbye.

The Chicago duo’s new single doesn’t overstay its welcome, and that’s exactly the point. “There’s something to be said for a two-minute-or-less gem that aims for the heart,” the band said, namechecking Dolly Parton’s Gonna Hurry and Big Star’s Take Care as inspiration.
While 2022’s Spark expanded their sonic palette, Darling brings the focus back to what Whitney do best: quiet beauty, bittersweet melodies, and vocals that ache in all the right places. There’s a shift in the song’s second half, a soft turn from goodbye to acceptance, but it still ends too soon, in that perfect, poignant way.

Still Soulful After All These Years
Formed in 2015 by Max Kakacek (Smith Westerns) and Julien Ehrlich (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Whitney have built one of the most quietly beloved catalogues in modern indie. Their blend of soul, folk, and soft psych-pop, laced with heartbreak and falsetto — has earned them spots on festival stages from Coachella to Pitchfork, and a global following that only grows with each release.
“Darling” may be brief, but its emotional weight lingers, a sign that Whitney are stepping gently into a new chapter, one song at a time.
