There’s a particular kind of courage in making your first solo statement a song this personal. Tahla Ward is a seventeen-year-old from Riverton in the South Island, a performer since the age of seven, and as of today she has a debut single that sounds like it was written by someone who’s been doing this for much longer.
‘Dear Michael’ is a break-up ballad rooted in warm country sounds β lush harmonies, striking lead vocals, and the kind of lyrical specificity that only comes from writing about something that actually happened. Tahla wrote it at the Tamworth Country Music Academy in Australia alongside singer-songwriter Lyn Bowtell, a ten-time Golden Guitar Award recipient at the Country Music Awards of Australia. That’s quite a collaborator for a debut.
“It was inspired by my first real break-up,” Tahla says. “It talks about the complexity of love, heartbreak, and reflection. I wanted to turn this emotional experience into a universally relatable song. It comes from a very real place, so I hope when others listen to it, they can connect to the song with their own experiences.”
That emotional honesty is exactly what makes the single land. The storytelling is focused and unhurried, the production warm enough to wrap around you, and Tahla’s voice carries a maturity that sits well beyond her years without ever feeling like it’s reaching for something it hasn’t earned.

She’s far from a newcomer to performing, mind. Tahla has been playing on both sides of the Tasman since she was seven and is a member of Southland trio The Dollys, who took out the NZ Gold Guitar Award in the Intermediate category in 2023. She’s also shared stages with the likes of Brother Hollow, The Bushwackers, Amber Lawrence and Jenny Mitchell β a support circuit that’s given her a grounding in live performance that comes through in how settled ‘Dear Michael’ feels.
The release marks the first act of Lil Sister’s Rising Stars, an initiative dedicated to spotlighting Aotearoa’s brightest emerging talent. As debut singles go, it’s a strong opening statement β and a confident one.
